W. R. Vansant's 1896 subscription volume on the Cuban revolt — a contemporary, primary-source account of the 1895–96 uprising that drew the United States toward the Spanish-American War of 1898. The Library of Congress copyright notice confirms the author: “Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1896, by W. R. Vansant, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D.C.” Bound in a gorgeous heavily-embossed dark red pictorial cloth, with the fold-out ‘Island of Cuba’ map — showing Jamaica, Porto Rico, Crooked Island and Great Bahama — present and intact. Vansant subscription editions are uncommon and tied to the propaganda campaign supporting U.S. intervention in Cuba. An America 250 piece.
